Our first UStream broadcast talk. Technical hiccups aside (flipped picture orientation, loss of sound at some points, running around to find a projector at the last minute), the discussion was fruitful. With the help of her CLEAR portable wifi, Kelani Nichole coordinated Twitter, Skype, web browsing, and UStream with enthusiasm and knowledge, and we look forward to seeing more of her research and curatorial work in the field of web based art practice in the coming year.

Hi Alanna,

Were you thinking something along the lines of the attached sketch?

I had been thinking about using the pillar and some of the surrounding the wall space for a piece, are you flexible with the depth to give this piece some room?

Or how about making the head-on vantage point at an angle from the walls; something like grizfloorAL2 sketch (if I’m understanding the arrangement of the panels correctly). This may give the viewer a more varied reaction to the piece as the move through the space.

And if you look at photos of ceiling there is a beam that runs north/south directly above the pillar, not sure how tall it is (roughly 15in).

the whole work will be 3 metres deep so the distance from the back wall to panels 4&5 will be approximately 3 metres (or according to the diagram up to the pillar)

You may want to make the panels so that they could be trimmed if necessary. Or make them smaller then the room height and leave a little gap by the ceiling.

Will you need to add a little weight at the bottom to keep them from curling or swaying too much?

I think it’s important to acknowledge that my piece is made up of 5 panels i.e it/s an installation not 5 separate photographs……I’d expect the space between the panels to be clear and head on ideally I’d also like the space to be clear (that doesn’t include the walls…would be open to discuss works that appear through the panels via the walls etc). With that in mind it may be that there is some form of division. What were you thinking? Cheers lane

Hi All,

I like “Duett” for the title, nice and simple.

Attached are 2 details of 300ft Seascape (Atlantic City) the blurry part is from motion of moving the paper, the more detailed section is from having paused for longer. Let me know your thoughts on using one of these for the show image.

(I have been having trouble photographing the entire object, the studio isn’t the best place to shoot work, and I think I would prefer a detail anyway.)

Tentative list of works:

300ft Seascape (Atlantic City); unique C-print; 2011; 8”height, variable diameter (probably about

Untitled (Pillar Print); site-specific, unique C-print, 2011, dimensions to be determined

Atlantic Ocean; inkjet print; 2011; 8x10 (maybe 11x14)

This will be a studio shot of the pillar piece correcting for distortion, similar to some of the pieces on my site.

And I’ve been working on some prints/objects that use cardboard boxes as an armature, but I feel they are still in progress. I’d like to include it/them if it fits with the show and I can resolve the current issues.

Alanna- I’m free all day tomorrow to chat, whenever is good for you. I’d like to discuss logistics of hanging your work, tentative placement, and I was wondering if you would want to show your book in addition to the prints.

Matt do you have some images for tomorrow’s deadline?

A German title could be cool - I love the word zwischen (between) - what about a german word for duet or something?

Just looked it up, German for duet is “Duett” - I like that, it sort of combines the english and german.

If you want to be around for the Dec 6 meeting Alanna I can bring my ipad and carry you around with us. But if you are busy I think we will manage. It’s up to you if you’d like to join in.

Using an image of Matt’s as a main image is fine with me. Maybe we could use a detail?

Hi All

Sorry for the slow reply, I had to go back to London briefly. Thanks so much for the info re the space and ceiling. This is going to help enormously with planning the fixtures.

I’m really up for working on a theme/pairing of us both and would prefer to use an alternative image rather than one of my own, only for the reason that I feel that the most recent works are preparatory. That being said Matt, I’d welcome you using one of yours as the main image.

The piece I will be showing in the space will be called:

High res images are attached (am happy to use these as supporting images but not as main publicity)

Hi Alanna,

Here are some pics (from my poor quality cell phone) of the space to show you the ceiling.

-There are pipes and pillars that hang down from the ceiling; these may restrict how your work can hang. Ceiling is roughly 12.5 feet.

-The tract lighting and florescent fixtures are moveable to my knowledge.

-“eastwall” shows an electrical fixture that is on the east wall of the gallery between the pillar and the south wall; this probably won’t be in our way.

-There is a ceiling beam that runs the length of the gallery above the eastern pillar; it appears to be 11” wide like the pillar, not sure how tall (12-15 inches approx).

-“grizfloorplan” is from my sketch book. The wall with the doorway would be the southern wall, measurements are in inches, and I used the rough dimensions that Mary provided so it may not be completely accurate.

Hope this is helpful.

I haven’t had a stroke of brilliance yet for a show title or postcard image. I was thinking something along the lines of denoting the “pairing” of the two of us: dyad, duet, grouping, etc…

Or by default the show could be: “Alanna Lawley & Matt Giel” (or vice versa) and the postcard image could be images of our work.

Hi Becky,

The Griz is very excited about working with you for our first show of the 2012 year. I have attached a contract and letter for you to review. Please sign the contract and send it to Mary Smull, at the stated address in the letter, six weeks prior to installation. Also, please email the required press materials to our Griz account six weeks prior to installation. This schedule will give us ample time to send out the press release and print the cards for the show. Cindy told me that as the curator you might want to have a part in formation of the press for the show, let us know how you want to proceed. I have begun the top portion of the contract to lay out the dates for the install, opening, dienstall, etc.

Please feel free to contact me concerning any questions as we move forward. From this point on I will (in general) be your main contact.
